Project ELE takes place far in the future when a deadly virus has killed off most of the population. To keep people safe, the government has decided to make holes in the O-zone so the heat can kill the virus. Unfortunately, the heat is also too extreme for people to survive, so shelters have been set up until the heat and virus goes away. The rich can buy their way in and live a lavish life inside, but the lower classes must go through an extensive waiting and testing process to be admitted in, and then they have to work for their spot. After going through the testing, Willow and her father are admitted into the shelter. Her brother and mom are not. Inside, things are different. Teens work more than they learn-except for the rich ones. Willow becomes friends with 3 of her co-workers- Connor, Claire, and Alec, her boss whom she starts to date. After a day of exploring the sewer systems under the shelter, Willow and Alec (and later Conner and Claire) notice that they are changing. Their eyes change color, and they develop strange abilities, like invisibility and reading minds. Willow is the most powerful of friends, and teams up with Zach (a rich jerk who makes Willow extremely nervous and has the gift of compulsion) to find the source of the abilities. Soon, though, the search turns dangerous and Willow finds herself in a deadly situation. After a narrow escape, Willow must do whatever she can to find her friends and save her own life; even if it means going to where its most dangerous: outside.
I would probably give this book 3 out of 5 stars. It defiantly wasn't the best book I'd ever read, but it wasn't bad either. It was kind of slow and random to me. Don't get me wrong, I really liked it and couldn't put it down, but there wasn't a lot of action, and the characters didn't pull me in. My favorite character was Zach, and he's the bad guy! You're not supposed to LIKE the bad guy! Also, the abilities themselves just seemed random. I thought this story would be about stopping the virus in this post-apocalyptic world, but it wasn't. Maybe the new abilities will make more sense in the next book, but it just seemed strange here. I would recommend this book to anyone, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
